The SKU has a number of competitions throughout the year. These competitions are split into 2 categories, Kata (Form) & Kumite (Fighting).
In the Kata events, each competitor is placed into age & belt categories.
In the Kumite events it varies as the children are split into belt level & age categories, while the adults are placed in belt level & weight categories.
The Kata aspect relates to set movements performed by the competitor. These movements are performed alone to show attacks & defences.
The Kumite aspect relates to fighting, where the competitors must control their techniques. It is NOT semi-contact, NOR is it full contact. The rules that govern the SKU Kumite events are strict with regards to control, do not misunderstand this as an easy way of fighting because it is more difficult to control your movements than just to let them go & apply full force. It is acknowledged that when you score on your opponents you are controlling your techniques; if the scenario was to change to real life street attacks then you would not be controlling the moves.
With regards to Kata & Kumite, club students will have the opportunity, as they progress to an acceptable level, to train with the SKU England squad, which could lead to them being put forward for the National squad.
